On March 5, 2008, Archbishop Raymond L. Burke issued the following statement regarding Rev. Marek Bozek:I am deeply saddened to inform you that I have begun the process for the dismissal of Rev. Marek Bozek from the clerical state.
As Archbishop of St. Louis, it is my responsibility to safeguard the unity of the Catholic Church and protect the souls of the faithful. Because Rev. Bozek has broken communion with the Catholic Church, and has not returned to his home diocese to seek reconciliation with the Church, Church law requires me to begin this process.
Rev. Bozek has failed to participate in the hearing conducted at noon today for the purpose of his reconciliation with the Church. This further act of contempt for the requirements of communion with the Church only increase my deep pastoral concern for him and the faithful whom he is leading away from the Church.
The situation of Rev. Bozek is sad for the whole Church. It is cause of great concern for me as Archbishop. Please join me in praying that Rev. Bozek will be reconciled with the Church and that the great harm which has been caused to the Church, with the help of God's grace, will be healed.
