Pithy Email on the Veiling Issue

A longtime reader sent this email in response to the veiling post-- I got a kick out of it:

Sometimes you can prove the veil is the law with just a couple of pictures

Oh, yeah folks!! That's Bill and Hillary with JP II.

Oh, for crying out loud. These pictures don't prove that veils are the law! They don't PROVE anything, except that women who get an audience with the Holy Father tend to wear veils, probably because they have been told that is the traditional etiquette, and they are respecting the POPE. Laura Bush, I need not point out, is NOT CATHOLIC and is not under this "LAW."

Catherine, um, it was supposed to be amusing.

But don't you think it is a little telling that two protestant women 1)know about the custom of veiling before the Holy Father and 2)respect that Catholic custom-- as you say, they aren't Catholic-- when the majority of Catholics don't know or practice the custom of veiling in Church?

Hasn't our catechesis been lacking for some time, and haven't we been losing our Catholic identity as well-- an identity made up of big things, but also little things like veiling, or meatless Fridays?

Unfortunately, your pictures prove nothing other then Vatican protocol for meeting the pontiff. There are no pictures you post that prove your position of a veil being required for women as Masses.

Actually they show that "even a stopped clock is right twice a day"! :-)

God love "LONGSKIRTS" for her comment about the stopped clock.

No. The point of the photos is that the niceties of everything Catholic are second nature to the citizens of the Vatican city state. They should be setting our style, not the reverse.

I happened to think Laura looked much hotter in her veil. And I think Hillary wasn't nearly so dowdy.

Lol! You are so right! Its just pontifical protocal!
