THE SOLEMNITY OF A JEWISH WOMAN AT HER SON’S CIRCUMCISION.
I.
That tiny Savior that tiny twist
Of a twig, of a knife of a Reb of a Bris.
And Poor Virgin, Son in strife,
Bleeding from his manhood, crying for his life,
She watches, helplessly. Her
Solemnity.
Such is the way are made new Days,
New Months, New Years, New hours, New Ages;
Blood, and tears and cleansing and noise,
A new Jew, a new year, a new cock roistering
Crows three times far off; the Virgin hears it,
Her Solemnity.
Why was it the feast of Mary, the Mother of God at our parish? I think we missed the Circumcision.
The new calendar has the feast as the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. This is one aspect of the feast of the circumcision that has been traditionally celebrated-- it is a fitting day to honor Mary's motherhood. Gueranger covers this in the entry for the circumcision. Why the circumcision was dropped I can only speculate.
