Information on the Father Corapi Conference Tomorrow

Details: The conference will be held Saturday, May 1, at the Chaifetz Arena, #1 Compton Ave. on the campus of St. Louis University in Midtown St. Louis. Doors open at 8 a.m.; Father Corapi's first talk will begin at 9 a.m. Archbishop Robert J. Carlson will celebrate a closing Mass at 4:30 p.m.

Today is the feast day of Saint Catherine of Siena, stigmatist, Doctor of the Church, glory of the Dominicans, and co-patroness of Italy.

The image at left is a detail from a fourteenth century fresco by Andrea Vanni. Methodist Jim, a sometime reader of this blog, very thoughtfully gave Sharon and me an icon with this image after a trip to Siena. I have to check, but I believe that the protestant origin doesn't prevent it from being blessed.

Just kidding! No hate mail, please.

May Saint Catherine, the sage counselor of another Pope in temporal distress, intercede for our beloved Holy Father today.

Holy Mass and "Active Participation"

The best way of assisting at Holy Mass is the one which makes us participate most in the sublime action taking place at the altar. The liturgical method is especially recommended; by having us recite the same prayers as the priest, it makes us follow more closely the various parts of the Holy Sacrifice. However, instead of being preoccupied with the exact rendering of the words, which is obligatory only for the priest, we should penetrate the meaning of the different prayers, especially those said at the principal parts of the Mass, such as the Offertory, Consecration, and Communion.

Although the liturgical method is very good, it is not the only one; the Encyclical Mediator Dei expressly says, "The needs and dispositions are not the same in all souls, and they do not continue to remain the same in each one." It is not uncommon, for example, that, after the following the liturgical method for a long time with fruit, a particular soul might feel the need of closing the Missal in order to taste a little more profoundly the very substance of the Mass and to "penetrate" it further. This is not going backward but forward. Instead of focusing the attention in a special way on the various ceremonies and prayers, the soul feels the need of "getting into intimate contact with the High Priest" (ibid.), in order to unite itself interiorly with His action, His offering, and His immolation. By doing this, she follows the Mass in a simple "loving attention" which is the characteristic of contemplative prayer. Without necessarily following the development of the Sacred Rite in all its various parts, the soul fixes the mind and heart upon the Mass drama with a general glance, made keen by love. Thus we advance in an ever clearer understanding of the Holy Sacrifice.

However, it will be well to return to the Missal from time to time, especially to follow the liturgy on Sundays and feasts; each time our soul does this we will find new light, and a new sense, which will help us to penetrate the very substance of the Holy Sacrifice.

Considering the Unintended (?) Consequences of the Arizona Immigration Law

This post is NOT about Immigration policy. I have my own thoughts on that issue, which you are free to endure if you ever ask me about it at a dinner party or reception. You may then wish you hadn't.

The purpose of this post, however, is to ask readers to engage in a momentary thought exercise. Why? Because I suspect that many of you might have read about the recent law enacted in Arizona that allows state officials to start doing something the federal government has failed to do for years-- namely, to enforce the laws disallowing people to enter the U.S. without permission. And I also suspect that as a matter of policy many of you think this is a good idea.

Taking that into account, it is important for citizens of an allegedly free country to consider the consequences of this law for U.S. citizens themselves. It is no secret that I think that faithful Catholics may one day face the prospect of the regime seeking to find and punish us. And so I present this article by William Norman Grigg for you to use to exercise your powers of comparison and contrast:

The Borders Are Closing In

~ U.S. Border Guard to a befuddled Canadian citizen arbitrarily detained while trying to visit a shopping mall in Niagara Falls, New York.

Returning to his home in Toronto following a brief visit to the States last December, author Peter Watts had the misfortune of being "randomly selected" for a search by members of the Regime's Border Guards Directorate stationed at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, Michigan.

The science fiction novelist's bad luck was exacerbated by a momentary miscommunication: He saw a "flicker of motion" outside his car that he assumed was a wave, rather than a demand to pull over. His passenger understood what was happening, and urged Watts to pull over – which he did.

"When I go like this, I'm not waving hello," sneered the border guard, assuming the snarky tone of unmerited superiority that armed functionaries use when addressing Mundanes.

"I guess we're not in Canada, because sometimes that means 'hello,'" Watts replied, thereby committing a potentially fatal offense called "contempt of cop."

He compounded that supposed sin by getting out of the car and asking what the guards were doing as they pawed through the luggage in his trunk and the bags in his back seat.

As a citizen of the freest country (by default) in North America, Watts made the critical error of assuming that he had the right to ask why his privacy was being invaded, and that his question would be answered. His question was answered with repeated demands that he get back in his car.

After Watts hesitated, one of the guards seized his arm. This provoked a predictable "flinch response" from Watts, who pulled his arm away.

For reasons that make perfect sense to those attuned with Kafka's sense of reality, American law enforcement officers often construe the act of pulling away from their unwanted physical contact as a form of "assault" – and thus as a pretext for the summary administration of "street justice."

First two, and then eventually three, of the stalwart guardians of our sacred northern frontier took turns pummeling the slender, mild-mannered 52-year-old man. Watts was punched, kicked, pepper-sprayed, handcuffed, then thrown wet and partially disrobed into an unheated cell. He was then interrogated, held overnight, and charged with "assaulting a federal officer" after being denied access to legal counsel (and pestered repeatedly to repudiate his Miranda rights).

After Watts' computer, flash drives, and loose-leaf notebook were confiscated, he was unceremoniously dumped – in shirtsleeves, without so much as a windbreaker – on the Canadian side of the border.

Ironically, in his novel Maelstrom, Watts – a Hugo nominee who specializes in dystopian fiction – appears to have anticipated his experience. Describing the abuse suffered by a character at the hands of customs officials, Watts observes: "Technically, of course, it was not an assault. Both aggressors wore uniforms and badges conferring the legal right to beat whomever they chose."

A jury of dutiful collectivist drones found Watts guilty of the supposed crime of "non-compliance with a border guard"; his "crime," reduced to its essence, was to ask, "why?"

Although Watts could have been forced to spend years as part the world's largest prison population, the presiding judge was content to pilfer $1,628 from the victim of the assault at the border – after treating him to a patronizing lecture about the need to be "nice" to the feral armed adolescents who constitute the State's punitive caste.


Is it easier to build a police state from the inside out, or from the outside in? We may never know, since the architects of the Homeland Security State are doing both simultaneously.

Whenever a society descends into totalitarianism, the ruling clique will eventually close the borders – not just to prevent contamination by politically troublesome foreign influences, but also to prevent the egress of refugees and (most importantly) the flight of capital to more congenial economic environments.

In our case, the invasive and arbitrary powers exercised in the name of border security are becoming embedded in routine law enforcement within the interior. Although the geography of the contiguous 48 states remains unchanged, there is a very real sense in which the borders are closing in on us.

The Border Patrol – the kind folks who treated Mr. Watts to a dose of uniquely Amerikan hospitality – already carries out warrantless, suspicionless checkpoints as far as 100 miles inside the national boundary. The Department of Homeland Security insists that the Fourth Amendment proscription of "unreasonable searches and seizures" doesn't apply to "border enforcement" searches. This would mean that the two-thirds of the U.S. population living within 100 miles of an international border are residents of a "Constitution-Free Zone."

Tragically, the expansion of the immigration control "Constitution-Free Zone" is being propelled by some of the most outspoken critics of "big government."

Last week, many (by no means all) adherents of the Tea Party movement briefly suspended their campaign against invasive government to promote and applaud the enactment of a measure turning Arizona into an authentic police state – that is, one in which police can demand identity papers from practically anyone and arrest those who don't comply.

Under SB 1070, signed into law by Gov. Jan Brewer on April 24, any "lawful contact" between a law enforcement officer and a citizen can end with the latter being arrested and detained if he cannot satisfy a "reasonable suspicion" that he is in the country without official permission.

An incident that occurred two days before that law was signed by Brewer demonstrates that a valid driver's license may not be sufficient to allay that suspicion, and that it's entirely possible for a native-born U.S. citizen who fully cooperates with the police to end up being handcuffed, arrested, detained and humiliated.

On April 22, an Arizona resident who identifies himself as Abdon (he hasn't chosen to disclose his surname) pulled his truck into a weigh station. As his vehicle was being inspected, Abdon was asked by an official to display proof of legal residency. He promptly handed over a valid Arizona commercial driving license; he also supplied his Social Security number and additional personal details.

For some reason this was considered insufficient, and Abdon ended up being cuffed and hauled away to an ICE detention facility while his wife – who was dragged out of work – was dispatched to their home to retrieve Abdon's birth certificate and other documents.

The unfortunate truck driver's birth certificate listed his birthplace as Fresno, California. This means that he – unlike one, or possibly both, major party candidates in the last presidential election – has an unassailable claim to being a "native-born United States citizen." He had complied with every demand made of him at the weigh station, and did nothing to suggest that he harbored criminal intent of any kind.

The only source of the "reasonable suspicion" that led to Abdon's arrest was his visible ethnicity. This is the standard under which American citizens (particularly, but not exclusively, of Latino ancestry) can now be harassed, arrested, and detained in the State of Arizona.

The more frequently this kind of thing happens, the likelier it becomes that innocent people will be seriously hurt – as if being accosted, questioned, and detained by armed strangers for reasons beyond one's control weren't sufficient injury.

SB 1070 has been the equivalent of a public works project for the "tolerance" industry, which is busy planning boycotts and other expressions of punitive sanctimony against Arizona. This had the predictable, albeit unfortunate, effect of leading at least some honorable people of goodwill to assume the best about the measure without examining its impact on individual liberty.

Every invasion of individual rights happens with the eager support of people acting in the sincere and thoroughly mistaken confidence that what they permit the state to do to others will never be done to them.

The seminal error is to insist on exceptions to the principle that government – assuming, of course, that one should be permitted to exist – must be strictly limited to protecting the life, liberty, and property of every individual.


Enactment of Arizona's "your papers, please" legislation – which, Judge Andrew Napolitano predicts, won't survive constitutional scrutiny – comes at a time when the problem of illegal immigration is in remission, both in that border state and nation-wide. It's entirely likely that with immigration beginning to taper off, the border enforcement apparatus being built today will increasingly be directed inward.


Saint Peter of Verona, Pray for Us

St. Peter of Verona is the fastest-canonized saint in the history of the Catholic Church, being raised to the altars a mere 337 days after his martyrdom.

St. Peter's feast day is today; he is the patron saint of inquisitors. We seek his intercession for all whom battle heretics today.


Saint Peter of Verona, O.P. also known as Saint Peter Martyr (1206 – April 6, 1252), was a 13th century Dominican preacher and Inquisitor in Italy.


He was born in the city of Verona, a son of Cathars, adherents of the dualist faith, which posits a good God and an evil god as equal and opposing powers; the evil god is usually responsible for or at the very least in control of the material world. This religion had many adherents in Northern Italy in the thirteenth century. Peter went to a Catholic school, and later to the University of Bologna, where Peter is said to have maintained his orthodoxy and at the age of fifteen, met Saint Dominic. Peter joined the Order of the Friars Preachers (Dominicans) and became a celebrated preacher throughout northern and central Italy.

In 1252, because of what was said to be his virtues, severity of life and doctrine, talent for preaching, and zeal for the orthodox Catholic faith, Pope Innocent IV appointed him Inquisitor for Lombardy; he had been fighting against heretics since the 1230s under Pope Gregory IX.

As his superiors destined him to preach to the Cathars, he evangelized nearly the whole of Italy, preaching in Rome, Florence, Bologna, Genoa, and Como. Crowds came to meet him and followed him; and conversions were numerous. He typically attacked Catholics who confessed the Faith by words, but in deeds denied it. The Cathars, against whom he preached, were a heretical group that adhered to elements of dualism and Manichaeism and rejected the authority of the Church and many Christian teachings.

He was killed by a group of Cathars on April 6, 1252, when returning from Como to Milan. According to legend, a man called Carino who with some other Cathars had designed the attack struck his head with an axe, and then gave Peter's companion Dominic several fatal wounds. It is told that, upon rising to his knees, Peter recited the first article of the Symbol of the Apostles (the Apostle's Creed), and offering his blood as a sacrifice to God he dipped his fingers in it and wrote on the ground the words: "Credo in Unum Deum". The assassin then pierced his heart.


His body was carried to Milan and laid in the Church of Sant'Eustorgio, where an ornate mausoleum, the work of Balduccio Pisano, was erected to his memory.

His assassin, Carino, later converted and eventually became a Dominican at Forlì and is the subject of a local cult as "Blessed Carino of Balsamo".

Many miracles were attributed to him while alive, and even more after his martyrdom.
St Peter was canonized by Pope Innocent IV on March 9, 1253 after an interval of only 337 days, making him the fastest papally canonized saint in history.

Saint Peter the Martyr's feast day is on April 29. The Church of Santa Maria Antiqua in Verona is co-entitled to him.

Institute of Christ the King Sponsoring Youth Choir Camp August 1-6

From the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest comes exciting news for young people with an interest in choral music. Under the direction of a faculty of stellar Catholic musicians, young people ages 9-15 will have the opportunity to experience intensive Catholic choral training at the Ursuline Motherhouse of Mount Saint Joseph in Kentucky.

The faculty are impressive:

Nick Botkins, Director of Sacred Music and Master of the Choirs at St. Francis de Sales Oratory;

Kevin Allen, Church Composer and Chant Master at the Monastery of the Holy Cross;

The Marriage of Typically Bad Modern Journalism with Anti-Catholicism: Making Up "News" Out of Whole Cloth

The execrable sheet of excrement known to some as The Washington Post has chosen to print a column of vomit-on-paper by one Anthony Stevens-Arroyo that comes to bury the Pope by not praising him. Typical bleah, done with all the typical courage of a centurion striking our Lord at the pillar.

But included in the piece is a brand-new flat-out lie without any pretense of foundation, one that slanders our beloved Archbishop Burke. Here is the relevant part word-for-word:

Some prelates acted in ways that constituted cover-ups. Many of them have accepted blame for errors and made public statements of apology. Others, like Cardinal Law, formerly of Boston and Archbishop Burke, formerly of St. Louis, have been "kicked upstairs" to the Vatican. No apologies come directly from them, and one wonders if such prelates might be liable for criminal action in the U.S. for obstruction of justice concerning the way they handled pedophilia cases.

Shame no longer exists, or Stevens-Arroyo would crumble under the weight of it.

St. Stanislaus Reconciliation Nigh? UPDATED

[UPDATE] I am looking into this story, and may have some additional information later. Until then, I have included some additional information from the STLToday story, and add some comments after the article below.

St. Stanislaus appears close to reconciliation

ST. LOUIS — In the strongest evidence yet that the long legal battle between the St. Louis Archdiocese and St. Stanislaus Kostka Church could soon be resolved, the church's pastor, the Rev. Marek Bozek, told parishioners Sunday that he may be leaving within months to start his own church.

"I told them that I, and the board, have been working hard to reach a settlement (with the archdiocese) that is acceptable to both parties," Bozek said in an interview Monday. "And that if and when we do, I most probably will not be part of the picture at St. Stanislaus."

Bozek said he could not discuss the details of the settlement negotiations, but he said they were "moving forward." He said he was hopeful that "a happy ending" would occur for St. Stanislaus "within months."

"I don't want to be the last standing impediment to those negotiations," he said.

In November, Bozek made a similar announcement to the parish, saying if his departure would be better for the church, he would step down.

Bernard Huger, an attorney for the archdiocese, did not return a call for comment. But in November, Huger said Bozek's presence was not the only obstacle the archdiocese faces in regaining the church.

"The rest of the parish would need to want to get back in communion with the church," Huger said at the time.

St. Stanislaus was founded in the 19th century with a unique structure that allowed it to manage its own finances and property. Tension between church members and the archdiocese heightened in 2004, when former St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke demanded that the church conform to the same legal and financial structure as all other parishes.

The church's lay board refused and changed its bylaws to eliminate the archbishop's authority. Burke responded by pulling the church's priests.

In 2005, the lay board named Bozek — then a priest in the Springfield-Cape Girardeau diocese — as its pastor, something only bishops can do.

Burke excommunicated Bozek, along with a succession of lay board members, and stripped the Polish church of its standing as a Roman Catholic parish.

The Polish-born Bozek was hailed as a hero by St. Stanislaus members in 2005 for risking his vocation to lead a church some Catholics felt had been abandoned by the archdiocese. But over the last four years, Bozek's version of Catholicism drove away many of the church's traditional members.

At the same time, his support for homosexuality in the church and women's ordination brought in a new group of parishioners.

In 2008, some of the original excommunicated board members turned against Bozek, and he engineered their removal from the board. A few of them reconciled with the church, then joined the archdiocese in its lawsuit against Bozek and the current board. Pope Benedict XVI laicized Bozek in 2009.

Bozek said Monday he intends to start a new church "that will be Catholic, but not Roman Catholic — not Vatican Catholic — somewhere in St. Louis."

"There's a need among St. Louis Catholics who have been disenfranchised by their church and who are disappointed with their Catholic leaders," Bozek said. "This church will be Catholic, but without Roman Catholic limitations."

Some quick comments:

1. I have to hand it to one of the commenters on this blog, who in the recent post on the replacement of the Seminary Rector speculated that Msgr. Wojcicki, the outgoing Rector and former pastor of St. Stanislaus, might be involved in the process of reconciling St. Stan's to the fold. Now, obviously, this is mere speculation, but the timing is interesting, to say the least. Until I get more, I'll keep it in the "amazingly coincidental" column.

2. Mr. Bozek is indeed the biggest--though of course not the only-- obstacle to the return of the former parish to the Catholic Church. Running 1A as an obstacle is the entrenchment of heresy and schism he will leave in his wake. St. Stan's current reality places it far outside the realm of Catholicism, and it can be considered in no way Catholic. The former parish's leadership promotes and condones sodomitical "unions"; allows manifest public sinners to commit sacrilege by unworthy reception of Holy Communion; promotes schism by its public, heretical teachings and flirtations with protestant and schismatic sects; promotes the fantasy of women priestesses; and actively foments contumely for the Archbishop, and by necessary extension also the Holy Father and the Holy Catholic Church. Removing Bozek begins to heal the breach, but does not complete the healing process.

3. Those Board members who reconciled with the Church, and who helped to bring moral, legal and public relations pressure on the current St. Stan's regime, deserve credit. Though their initial actions in cooperating with the effort to bring Mr. Bozek to town and to disobey their Archbishop have reaped the whirlwind, the mercy of God is infinite, and they have taken great steps to repair the damage. May God continue to bless their efforts, and show them mercy.

4. I wonder how Mr. Bozek will like it when the new religious sect he contemplates forming or joining is merely one of the 33,000 protestant sects already out there--whose raison d'etre is merely one of a million quibbles with the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church-- and he loses his media glory as a would-be Savonarola to become "Pastor" Marek of the church of the what's happening now. Because 7 minutes after that happens, the media spotlight will be irrevocably lost to him. I pray that such an occurrence will give him the time and space he needs for serious reflection on the state of his soul. Because, of course, should he seek it God's mercy is there for him as well.

5. As for the present time, the article sums up Mr. Bozek's problems pretty well, alluding to "Bozek's version of Catholicism", and quoting the degraded ex-priest as desiring a Catholic, but "not Roman Catholic" church, and one "without Roman Catholic limitations". Anyone's "version" of Catholicism-- other than the visible Catholic Church, established as the one true Church by Christ and governed under the Roman Pontiff, the successor of Peter, to whom and to his successors Christ Himself entrusted her governance-- isn't Catholicism at all.

And that is what this is really all about.

That is the adjective that I would use to describe this editorial from The Remnant concerning the current attacks on the Holy Father.

I am posting excerpts below, not because I agree with every single point of it (I don't), but instead because of two reasons:

1) It makes several excellent points that really do need to be made, some of which aren't being made elsewhere in the media; and,

2) It is simply refreshing to hear someone stand up, without apology, for the glory of Catholic Tradition. From the full article:

Forging Peter's Chains (While Scourging Christ's Church)

While attempting to survive the current arctic winter once hailed as the New Springtime of Vatican II, there is a nagging temptation to quip through chattering teeth —Yep, we told you so! It’s not the right attitude, of course, but perhaps understandable. After all, Traditional Catholics spent over four decades in virtual exile at the hands of their modernist-appeasing coreligionists who rigorously defended the indefensible—the very regime of novelty responsible for the Church’s current auto-demolition.


Far too many of them pounded their ecclesial swords into flatware for fancy ecumenical dinner parties long ago. They laid their crowns at the feet of their enemies, and excised from their lexicons any dogmatic words that might offend the infidel. They protestantized their liturgy, stripped exorcisms from their Sacraments, and began behaving as if Hell and demons no longer exist. The joke was on them, however, since the playing field they so expertly leveled has since been overrun by demons that not only exist but are hell-bent on taking over Christendom and lynching churchmen of every stripe.

With empty scabbards and heads uncrowned, our princes can scarcely command obedience from aging priests and nuns much less crusaders for whose noble legacy they’ve been apologizing ad nauseam for decades. Open dialogue paved the way for open season on all things Catholic, including popes, and there are few Catholics left standing who are willing or able to defend the holy city or the hollow men inside.

Shell-shocked sheep can only wince at the effeminate posturing of all too many of their shepherds in the face of the snarling wolf pack Modernism set loose: “Let’s embrace our diversity. We apologize for our history, our dogmas and our dogmatism, and we invite our dialogue partners to join us in the search for truth and...blah, blah, blah!”

Nobody’s listening. Nobody cares—at least not until Catholic Tradition, bound and gagged, raises her bloodied head and attempts to speak. Then the wolves in the media and across the dialogue tables begin howling and frothing at the mouth. They still believe what all too many Catholics do not: That the Church is a divine institution and Tradition is her fortress. Traditional Catholicism—glory of angels and terror of demons—is, at the end of the day, the only thing that matters to friend or foe of Christ’s Bride.


Pioneers of Traditionalism used to remark that God will not be mocked for long. They were right, of course, and are being proven so every day now. In a matter of months we have seen the mighty Spirit of Vatican II fundamentally exposed, the canonization of John Paul ‘the Great’ stall, the Traditional Mass come storming back, and the Holy Father obviously deliberating over when to leap from the leaky lifeboat of progressivism back onto the barge of holy Tradition.

Michael Davies used to say that the New Mass would simply consume itself over time, having nothing inherent apart from novelty to sustain it . That doesn’t seem so far fetched any more, especially since our Modernist friends, having grown as passé as hippies, their liturgy as stale as a bowl of Digger Stew, seem to have run out of new ideas.

This point was made recently in Dr. Robert Moynihan’s excellent report on the historic traditional Mass at the National Shrine in Washington, D.C. In an article entitled “Solemn Latin Mass in Washington stirs change in Catholic liturgy,” the editor of Inside the Vatican writes:

But at least one Vatican official I talked to, also in the past month, told me he believes the future is solely and exclusively in a return to the old rite. "The old rite is our past, and it will be our future," he told me. "The new Mass is a passing phase. In 50 years, that will be entirely clear."

Whatever the case may be, one thing is certain: The Church finds herself at historic crossroads at this moment. Contrary to media claims, Pope Benedict is not yet a traditionalist per se (though the yapping media jackals seem to be backing him rapidly into that corner), but serious Catholics know full well that the attempted lynching of our Holy Father is part of a global initiative to criminalize the traditional Catholicism he now represents, at least in the eyes of a world that understands few of the distinctions involved.

The extent to which Pope Benedict has ushered Tradition back into the Church is far too much for those secularist jackals that believed it dead and buried back in 1965. Whether Benedict’s motu proprio Summorum Pontificum is the chief problem, or his lifting of the excommunications of the bishops of the SSPX, or his corrected translation of the all-important ‘pro multis’, or his ongoing talks with traditionalists in the Vatican—the driving motivation behind the global attack on Benedict seems to be fear—fear in the hearts of the Church’s adversaries that Tradition might rise again, that the Church really is of divine origin and that she can never actually be destroyed. Thus Catholic-bashing has become all the rage again with the current attack on the Holy Father being but the tip of an iceberg of militant anti-Catholicism.


The media firestorm against Peter is clearly an attack on the moral authority of Christ’s Church—a point which the Society of St. Pius X recently developed on its official website DICI.org in a column entitled “Behind the Denunciation of the Pedophile Priest Scandal”:

Every day the press serves up new revelations intended to show the guilty silence of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Benedict XVI, with regard to these crimes.

Why? Because those who are leading this campaign have not yet reached their goal: to discredit the Church as a whole in order to bring about the abolition of clerical celibacy.

The simplistic reasoning which they want to impose on public opinion in order to achieve the abrogation of consecrated celibacy can be summarized in this way: Catholic priests are pedophiles because they are celibate. Or in more sensational terms: clerical celibacy is a crime, because it is responsible for the criminal actions of the pedophile priests which the Church has tried to hush up. The pope himself is therefore an accomplice because he intends to keep the Catholic clergy in this crime-provoking celibacy.

Indeed, what we are witnessing is the attempted criminalization of Catholicism—the secularists know it, traditionalists have long known it, and maybe—just maybe—our shepherds are beginning to take note of it too now that the wolves they spent five decades trying to appease have initiated a veritable feeding frenzy on the “civilization of love”.

In April of this year, even Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State, began to drop the politically correct jargon that’s done such an incalculable disservice to the Church’s moral authority since Vatican II. During a news conference in Chile the Cardinal drew down the outrage of the masses with a statement of the perfectly obvious: “Many psychologists and psychiatrists have demonstrated that there is no relation between celibacy and pedophilia. But many others have demonstrated, I have been told recently, that there is a relation between homosexuality and pedophilia. That is true. That is the problem.”

Who knows—maybe all the Christophobic Catholic-bashing will have a silver lining. Maybe some of our diabolically disoriented shepherds will take heed of it and finally stir themselves from a half-century slumber. For that intention and for the inspiration and protection of our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, let us pray to the Lord.

Lawmakers: Military could quell Chicago violence

CHICAGO (AP) -- Two lawmakers who believe violence has become so rampant in Chicago that the Illinois National Guard must be called in to help made a public plea to Gov. Pat Quinn on Sunday to deploy troops.

A recent surge in violent crime, including a night last week that saw seven people killed and 18 wounded - mostly by gunfire - prompted the request from Chicago Democratic Reps. John Fritchey and LaShawn Ford. They were joined by Willie Williams, whose son was shot and killed in 2006.

Chicago has had 113 homicide victims so far this year, Fritchey said.

"As we speak, National Guard members are working side-by-side with our troops to fight a war halfway around the world," he said during a news conference in downtown Chicago. "The unfortunate reality is that we have another war that is just as deadly that is taking place right in our backyard."

Archbishop Carlson Names Father Michael Witt Interim Head of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary; Plans National Search for New President-Rector

His Grace Archbishop Robert J. Carlson today announced that Fr. Michael J. Witt, Ph.D., will replace Monsignor Ted Wojcicki as President-Rector of the Archdiocesan seminary on an interim basis. Readers may recognize Fr. Witt from his longstanding radio program on Church history on Covenant Network. The Archbishop plans to conduct a nationwide search for a permanent replacement.

I suggest this is a worthy intention to keep in our prayers, as this position is of vital importance to the proper formation of our future priests.

Wojcicki has served as President-Rector of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary since 2002. During the years of his leadership, there has been significant progress in many areas of our Seminary’s service to the Church. We continue to implement faithfully the Program of Priestly Formation developed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in accordance with norms established by the Holy See; our enrollment is growing; a Master Plan for the renovation and expansion of Seminary facilities has been developed; and a highly successful capital campaign has been completed at a time when many wondered whether the time was right for such an ambitious undertaking.

Wojcicki would be the first to say that these, and numerous other accomplishments, have involved the collaborative leadership and generous stewardship of many people. Still, it’s appropriate to offer special thanks to Msgr. Wojcicki, as the Seminary’s President-Rector, for his important role in guiding all of these initiatives during the past eight years.

With gratitude for all the ways that he has shared his gifts and talents with
Kenrick-Glennon Seminary during the past eight years, I have asked Msgr. Wojcicki to return to parish ministry, and he has readily agreed. I believe this is the right time to make this transition in leadership because of the firm foundation that Msgr. Wojcicki—the 38th Rector of our major seminary—has helped to establish during his significant contribution to the 192 year history of priestly formation in Saint Louis.

During the coming year, I plan to lead a national search for a new President-Rector who will provide leadership for the mission of
Kenrick-Glennon Seminary and for the renovation and expansion of its facilities. In the meantime, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Father Michael J. Witt, Ph.D. as interim President-Rector beginning this summer and continuing until the national search is completed. Father Witt is currently the Director of the Permanent Diaconate, Professor of Church History at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary and Director of St. Maximilian Kolbe House of Discernment. Meatless Friday Thursday: Food as an Investment?

Greetings, everyone! As I was surfing the net today, wondering why Earth Day and all the other made-up "holidays" couldn't be held together on a single day, just to get them all out of the way, I saw this story that wholesale food prices have jumped in March by the largest percentage since January 1984.

That story reminded me of another article I remember reading a couple of years ago-- the last time food prices rose significantly. Perhaps not coincidentally, this was also the last time gas prices reached the $3.00 to $4.00 range, as economists predict will happen this summer.

Thanks to the never-forgetting function of the internet (which is why I will never be elected to public office, btw), I
found the article at the Wall Street Journal, entitled "Load Up the Pantry". We all know there are some persons who store food for basic emergency preparation. The Mormons are famous for having a goal that every family have a year's worth of food stored up for whenever the end of the world comes around. I'm not sure, though, whether this food will be transported to whatever planet they inherit, and whether it will then feed their wives and spirit babies.

The gist of the WSJ story concerns the possibility of storing food as a smart investment. The cost of food has been increasing at a higher rate than the return a bank gives on savings accounts, money markets or CDs. It's that simple, really.

Taking a hypothetical situation and going further than this article does, imagine if inflation hits in earnest, or if the dollar collapses or merely hyperinflates due to the print-and-spend policy of the Fed. In that situation, even the stock market may not be a good investment, and government bonds may not inspire confidence. As a general rule, in those circumstances, commodities are an alternative. Gold and silver might be too expensive for the average family, however, or may be hard to get.

But everybody needs food. And if the price of food continues to jump, it may be a simple and smart investment. And so I reprint some excerpts from the full article for your consideration:

Stock Up the Pantry

I don't want to alarm anybody, but maybe it's time for Americans to start stockpiling food.

No, this is not a drill.

You've seen the TV footage of food riots in parts of the developing world. Yes, they're a long way away from the U.S. But most foodstuffs operate in a global market. When the cost of wheat soars in Asia, it will do the same here.

Reality: Food prices are already rising here much faster than the returns you are likely to get from keeping your money in a bank or money-market fund. And there are very good reasons to believe prices on the shelves are about to start rising a lot faster.


Stocking up on food may not replace your long-term investments, but it may make a sensible home for some of your shorter-term cash. Do the math. If you keep your standby cash in a money-market fund you'll be lucky to get a 2.5% interest rate. Even the best one-year certificate of deposit you can find is only going to pay you about 4.1%, according to Bankrate.com. And those yields are before tax.

Meanwhile the most recent government data shows food inflation for the average American household is now running at 4.5% a year.

And some prices are rising even more quickly. The latest data show cereal prices rising by more than 8% a year. Both flour and rice are up more than 13%. Milk, cheese, bananas and even peanut butter: They're all up by more than 10%. Eggs have rocketed up 30% in a year. Ground beef prices are up 4.8% and chicken by 5.4%.

These are trends that have been in place for some time.


The main reason for rising prices, of course, is the surge in demand from China and India. Hundreds of millions of people are joining the middle class each year, and that means they want to eat more and better food.

A secondary reason has been the growing demand for ethanol as a fuel additive. That's soaking up some of the corn supply.

You can't easily stock up on perishables like eggs or milk. But other products will keep. Among them: Dried pasta, rice, cereals, and cans of everything from tuna fish to fruit and vegetables. The kicker: You should also save money by buying them in bulk.

If this seems a stretch, ponder this: The emerging bull market in agricultural products is following in the footsteps of oil. A few years ago, many Americans hoped $2 gas was a temporary spike. Now it's the rosy memory of a bygone age.

The good news is that it's easier to store Cap'n Crunch or cans of Starkist in your home than it is to store lots of gasoline. Safer, too.

Report: 'Idol Gives Back'--to Pro-Abortion and Pro-Contraception Groups

The name of the show might give away the fact that the focus of this show really isn't about the Theological Virtues. This story might interest those self-identified pro-lifers who watch it, and especially those who might be inclined to donate to its "charity" efforts. From Christian News Wire:

'Idol Gives Back' -- To Pro-Abortion Groups

FRONT ROYAL, Va., April 21 /Christian Newswire/ -- Once again, "American Idol" is aligning itself with pro-abortion groups. Among the groups benefiting this year's "Idol Gives Back" fund-raising campaign are Save the Children and the United Nations Foundation. "Idol Gives Back," which airs tonight, will feature several celebrities who will urge Americans to make a donation.

Save the Children has a working relationship with what it calls "prominent international organizations." Several of these groups are actively pro-abortion, including Better World Fund, Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Population Action International, and the U.S. Committee for UNICEF.

In 2001, Save the Children worked with Planned Parenthood, the Population Action Council, and the pro-abortion Audubon Society on its five-year "Planet Campaign." Funded by the rabidly pro-abortion/ population control David and Lucile Packard and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations, the purpose of the campaign was to "raise awareness of the connections between international family planning and the health of children, women and the environment." The Planet Campaign used television and print advertising, community outreach, special events, and other activities to spread its message. Save the Children said the campaign's website provided "an international forum for discussion of, and action on, women's reproductive health---including family planning---in various countries and diverse cultures around the world."

Save the Children has stated that "family planning" has been a "critical component" of its work for nearly 20 years. The group quoted a UNICEF document which stated that "family planning could bring more benefits to more people at less cost than any other single technology now available to the human race." Save the Children noted that the report identified "access to family planning" as a "key factor contributing to maternal and child survival and well-being."

Several divisions of the United Nations have donated funds to Planned Parenthood and the body has wholeheartedly embraced its abortion and population control agenda.

"It is laudable that the people involved with 'American Idol' want to help the poor," said LDI President Douglas R. Scott, Jr. "But it is tragic that they would choose to do so through groups like the Save the Children and the United Nations Foundation. These groups have far too much deadly baggage." Of course, what many people do not know, because "American Idol" has not chosen to mention it, is that Simon Cowell is the chief executive officer of International Save the Children. This is surely why Save the Children was selected as a recipient charity.

"'American Idol' should stop using the contestants to raise money for groups when they are keeping the activities of these charities a secret," Scott said. "'American Idol' should practice full disclosure and give those contestants who may wish to decline participation in 'Idol Gives Back' the opportunity to do so without repercussions."

"If you believe the plight of preborn children is as important as the plight of the poor, do not participate in 'Idol Gives Back,'" Scott urged. "We are caring people who want to do our part to help those less fortunate, but we will do so through organizations that do not view the killing of human beings as a 'solution' to poverty and other adult-created problems."

It is worth noting that "American Idol" recently supported a fund-raising campaign by Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles.

Catholics Give the Best Parties

Postmodern man -- and postmodern woman -- don't know how to give a good party. It's up to Catholics to reclaim this lost art and share it with the world.

Why? Because good parties are intrinsic to our Catholic faith. The liturgical year is punctuated with a wide array of feast days and celebrations, many of which are Christianized versions of holidays that once closely tracked the agricultural calendar of planting and harvesting. The two largest and best-known feasts are, of course, Christmas and Easter, but there are also the two Christmas and Easter spin-offs, Epiphany and Pentecost. In addition, there's the feast of Mary, Mother of God (New Year's Day); Ascension Thursday; Corpus Christi; the feast of the Immaculate Conception; All Saints Day (with Halloween and the Day of the Dead); and, the most famous party of all, Mardi Gras, which has strayed far from its Catholic origin as the last celebration before the Lenten fast but still embodies a certain Catholic sensibility. Above all, every Sunday for Catholics is a feast day on which we celebrate Christ's resurrection. Only in Lent and the mini-Lent of Advent is it not party time, but even in these two seasons, there are exceptions for St. Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, St. Nicholas's Day, and other feasts.

Of course, as the Church wisely realizes, feasts are more fun if preceded by fasts. The stricter the fast, the merrier the feast. Truly the Catholic tradition has mastered the art of well-timed, heavily scheduled, carefully orchestrated good times.

National ID Card is the Trojan Horse in the Immigration Bill

The headline is purposely provocative, but the last paragraph says it better. Keep an eye on immigration "reform" legislation, as the long arm of the government wants to get longer. From LewRockwell.com:

As technology grows more sophisticated and the government and its corporate allies further refine their methods of keeping tabs on the American people, those of us who treasure privacy increasingly find ourselves engaged in a struggle to maintain our freedoms in the midst of the modern surveillance state.

Just consider the many ways we’re already being monitored and tracked: through our Social Security numbers, bank accounts, purchases and electronic transactions; by way of our correspondence and communications devices – email, phone calls and mobile phones; through chips implanted in our vehicles, identification documents, even our clothing. Data corporations are capturing vast caches of personal information on you so that airports, retailers, police and other government authorities can instantly identify and track you. Add to this the fact that businesses, schools and other facilities are relying more and more on fingerprints and facial recognition to identify us. All the while, banks and other financial institutions must verify the identities of new customers and make such records of customer transactions available to the police and government officials upon request.

In recent years, this information glut has converged into a mandate for a national ID card, which came to a head with Congress’ passage of the REAL ID Act in 2005. REAL ID requires states to issue machine-readable drivers’ licenses containing a wealth of personal data. However, because the REAL ID Act has been opposed by many states due to its cost and implementation, we have yet to be subjected to a nationwide implementation of a national ID card. That may all change depending on what happens with the immigration reform bill now before Congress.

A centerpiece of the immigration bill as proposed by Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is a requirement that all U.S. workers, citizen and resident alike, be required to obtain and carry biometric Social Security cards (national ID cards under a different name) in order to work within the United States. Attempting to appease critics of a national ID card, Schumer and Graham insist that "no government database would house everyone’s information" and that the "cards would not contain any private information, medical information, or tracking devices." However, those claims are blatantly false. Indeed, this proposed biometric card is nothing more than an end-run around opposition to a national ID card.

Civil and privacy rights advocates, as well as liberal-, conservative-, and libertarian-leaning organizations, have long raised concerns that a national ID card would enable the government to track citizens and, thus, jeopardize the privacy rights of Americans. President Reagan likened a 1981 proposal to the biblical "mark of the beast," and President Clinton dismissed a similar plan because it smacked of Big Brother.

Most recently, The Rutherford Institute and the American Civil Liberties Union, along with a host of other organizations, voiced their opposition to the biometric ID card. In a letter to both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate Judiciary Committees, Senate Finance Committee, House Ways and Means Committee and the White House, this coalition of groups declared that such a national ID card would "not only violate privacy by helping to consolidate data and facilitate tracking of individuals, it would bring government into the very center of our lives by serving as a government permission slip needed by everyone in order to work. As happened with Social Security cards decades ago, use of such ID cards would quickly spread and be used for other purposes – from travel to voting to gun ownership." And the national biometric ID card would "require the creation of a bureaucracy that combines the worst elements of the Transportation Security Administration and state Motor Vehicle Departments."

At a minimum, these proposed cards will contain a memory device that stores distinct – and highly personal – physical or biological information unique to the cardholder such as fingerprints, retina scan information, a mapping of the veins on the top of your hand, and so on. Eventually, other information, such as personal business and financial data, will probably also be stored on these cards. For the cards to be effective, an information storage system and central database, which will be managed by the government and its corporate handlers, will be required. That means a lot of taxpayer dollars will be used to create the ultimate tracking device to be used against American citizens.

As journalist Megan Carpentier reports, "The federal government wants to spend hundreds of millions of dollars, and force employees and employers still suffering from a recession to do the same, to create and make accessible to every employer a national database of the fingerprints of all Americans from the time they are 14 years old. And they want to do it in order to keep an estimated 11.9 million unauthorized immigrants – less than 4 percent of the total population of the United States – from accessing the job market." Under threat of substantial fines by the government and in what promises to be a cumbersome, bureaucratic process, employers will have to purchase ID card scanning devices (or visit their local DMV) in order to scan the cards of every individual they wish to hire before that individual can be employed. What this amounts to, essentially, is a troubling system in which all Americans would have to get clearance from the federal government in order to get a job.

Furthermore, the law’s requirement that machine-readable technology be incorporated into the card opens the door for radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to be placed on the cards. RFID is a tiny, automatic identification system that enables data – in this case the private information of American citizens – to be transmitted by a portable device. This will provide the government with unprecedented access to American citizens’ personal information. In addition, RFID tags emit radio frequency signals that allow the government to track the movement of the cards, as well as the cardholders. In other words, wherever your card goes, so do the government monitors.

When all is said and done, the adoption of a national biometric ID card serves one purpose only: to provide the government with the ultimate control over the American people. As one commentator has remarked, this is a "naked government power grab."

The time to resist is now. If we don’t, eventually, we will all have to possess one of these cards in order to be a functioning citizen in American society. Failing to have a biometric card will render you a non-person for all intents and purposes. Your whole life will depend on this card – your ability to work, travel, buy, sell, access health care, and so on.

What we used to call science fiction is now reality. And whether a national ID card is the mark of the Beast or the long arm of Big Brother, the outcome remains the same.

Excerpted from Christ, the Life of the Soul:

"We can consider the Church in two ways: as a visible and hierarchic society, founded by Christ to continue here below His sanctifying mission; she appears thus as a living organism. But that point of view is not the only one. To have a complete idea of the Church, we must, besides this, regard her as the holy and invisible society of souls who participate, through grace, in the Divine Sonship of Christ and form the kingdom He has won by His blood. It is this that St. Paul calls the body of Christ-- without doubt, not the physical body but His mystical body. It is particularly the second viewpoint that we shall dwell upon. However, we cannot pass over the first in silence.

It is true that the invisible Church, or the "soul" of the Church, is more important than the visible Church; but, in the normal Divine plan of Christianity, it is only through union with the visible society that souls enter into a participation in the good things and privileges of the invisible Kingdom of Christ.


It is not necessary for me to expound to you how this society, established by Christ upon Peter and the Apostles to maintain supernatural life in souls, has been organized, has developed, has spread throughout the world.

What we should keep in mind is that she is the continuer, here below, of the mission of Jesus by her doctrine, by her jurisdiction, by the sacraments, by her worship.

By her doctrine, which she keeps intact and whole in a living and uninterrupted tradition. By her jurisdiction, in virtue of which she has authority to direct us in the name of Christ. By the sacraments, whereby she enables us to draw from the wellsprings of grace that her Divine Founder has created. By her worship, which she herself organizes in order to render all glory and all honor to Christ Jesus and to His Father.


After Christ had come into this world, the sole means of going to the Father was to submit oneself entirely to His Son Jesus... While He was on earth, Christ confined infallibility to Himself: 'I am the truth'--'I am the way, the truth and the life';... Before leaving us, He entrusted His powers to His Church: 'As the Father has sent me, I also send you'; 'He who listens to you, listens to me; he who despises you, despises me; and he who despises me, despises Him that sent me.' In the same way as I get my teaching from my Father, so with the teaching you give out. That teaching you get from me. Whoever receives this teaching, receives my teaching, which is that of my Father. Whoever despises it, to whatever degree and in whatever measure that may be, despises my teaching, despises me, despises my Father.

See, then, this Church which possesses all the power, all the infallible authority of Christ, and understand that absolute submission of all your being, intellect, will and energies to this Church is the sole means of going to the Father. Christianity, in its true expression, only exists by means of this absolute submission to the doctrine and the laws of the Church.


The voice of Christ in His teaching, the Church is also the living continuation of His mediation.


You want to enter into the family of God, to be admitted among His children, to be incorporated into Christ? Address yourself to the Church: it is her baptism, not any other, which is the door through which one must pass. In the same way, to obtain pardon for our sins, it is to the Church that we must address ourselves. If we wish to receive food for our souls, we have to attend on the priests who have received, through the sacrament of Holy Orders, the sacred powers of dispensing to us the Bread of Life. And, among those who are baptized, the union of man and woman is culpable unless the Church has consecrated it by her blessing....


Such, then, is the manner in which the Church, founded by Jesus, continues His Divine work here below. The Church is the authentic depositary of the doctrine and the law of Christ; the dispenser of His graces among men; and, finally, the spouse who, in the name of Christ, offers to God for all her children perfect praise....

No one goes to the Father-- and going to the Father is what salvation and holiness is all about; no one goes to the Father except through Christ: 'No one comes to the Father but through me.' But remember well the following truth which is of no less capital importance. No one goes to Christ except through the Church; we only belong to Christ if we belong in fact or in desire to the Church; we only live the life of Christ in the unity of the Church."
