This kind of thing is VERY helpful in the reading of intergenerational novels.

I do think it needs a key. From what I can tell the rectangles represent males and the ovals females. however offspring are represented in some cases by the output symbol. Is that for cases where too many offspring have made a two dimensional representation impossible?

Is this the rabbit hole?

That said, of course, StG makes a good point.

This chart explains why I never read the book.

I know, it's on the "must read" list. I have a niece named after Kristen.

Not the rabbit hole. Just finished the book. Really good. Still trying to get my head completely around it. Highly recommend it.

Ooooh, don't let the chart scare you away from so wonderful a work! It's been several years since I read it, but I don't remember a complicated family tree being any distraction from the story. It is so rich on so many levels. A work of (historical) fiction that is sure to move the reader spiritually, emotionally; it deserves its place on the 'must read' list.

Think it's time for a re-read....
