For Delena...

...quizzing whether I'm still alive, because Francis cited King Lincoln in his speech to the kabuki congress today.  I didn't watch the speech, but I submit this entry from Thomas DiLorenzo, a scholar critical of King L:

The Pope's "Guardian of Liberty"...

. . . as mentioned in his speech to Congress today is the man who, in his first inaugural address, pledged his support for a constitutional amendment that would have enshrined slavery explicitly in the Constitution (the Corwin Amendment).  The man who made dozens of speeches in favor of deporting all the black people out of America and worked on plans to accomplish it to his dying day.  The man who threatened “invasion” and “bloodshed” in his first inaugural address in any state that refused to collect the newly-doubled federal tariff tax.  The man who waged total war for four years on his own countrymen, causing as many as 850,000 deaths according to the latest research, with about double that number maimed for life.  The man who illegally suspended Habeas Corpus and mass arrested tens of thousands of political critics, including local elected officials, newspapers editors and a congressman.  The man who shut down hundreds of opposition newspapers and imprisoned their editors and owners.  The man who rewarded generals like Grant, Sherman and Sheridan for mass murdering Southern citizens and plundering tens millions of dollars of private property.  The man who said nothing while entire regiments of soldiers gang raped Southern women.  The lifelong crony capitalist who spent his entire career shilling for the big business interests of the North who sought to plunder their fellow citizens with protectionist tariffs, corporate welfare, and a national bank run by politicians to fund it all.  The man who showered the railroad corporations who got him elected with millions of dollars worth of taxpayer-funded subsidies.  The man who destroyed the voluntary union of the American founding fathers and along with it the system of federalism that was its hallmark and replaced it with a Soviet-style, centralized, bureaucratic, compulsory union held together at gunpoint.  The man who obsessively experimented with bigger and bigger weapons of mass destruction to be used on his fellow American citizens, including women and children.   The atheist who peppered his speeches with religious rhetoric to fool the public he looked down on as ignorant fools.

Pope Francis made no mention of Jesus Christ in his speech to Congress; he reserved his praise for the real “god” of the American state, “Father” Abraham Lincoln.

Lol. Thomas DiLorenzo? There's a reason The Real Lincoln is given short shrift by serious academics, and that's because it's garbage. Even the editing and grammar are atrocious, to say nothing of his research methods, which bear more than a striking resemblance to the methodology of Christopher Hitchens, namely rummaging around for every spurious disparaging "fact" he can locate and pile into one hit job of a book. Except the object of Hitchen's ire was Mother Teresa. DiLorenzo should stick to economics, where at least his playing so loose with the facts and an obvious agenda won't look so out of place.

I would have thought you would have watched it, but it could be that you were busy at that time. In retrospect, perhaps Congressman Paul Gosar may have had it more than a little right after all.

So disappointing : ( He mentioned King Lincoln, MLK, Dorothy Day, and Thomas Merton. The only one who I think deserved the mention is Day, who did, I believe, end her membership in the Communist Party and her relationship with a man she was living in sin with to become a Catholic.

I offer a hypothetical for discussion, just to see how it develops: Roe vs Wade is overturned, and Congress follows with legislation that will ban abortion nationwide. The Northeast and West Coast threaten to secede, for a few reasons perhaps, but in particular to protect their "Peculiar Institution". Let them go?

Jdirishdad. Is there no end to your Pope Francis bashing? My God, to publish a criticism for Pope Francis mentioning Lincoln before the Congress of the United States of America. Shame on you. Every time I read one of your published comments, literally against anything at all Francis does or says,I begin to think of the Pharisees and their relentless criticism of anything Jesus did or said. Being a St. Louis resident, I am embarrassed for my City, that your blog carries our great City's name.

I guess Argentina teaches the same lies we hear. Can't really blame him for the ridiculous notion of Lincoln as hero of subsidiarity. A notion that even people who think he's the bestest president ever should be able to admit.

Nice to see the radical traditionalist granddaughter of a confederate, Day get mentioned.

Bryan Kirchoff,

I do not know precisely how the blogger would answer your question, but I will give my opinion. Even though I oppose the killing of unborn children unequivocally, and it would be tragic if any state would secede in order to keep slaughtering the unborn, I do not think that would justify military action. Yes, I think we should let, in that hpothetical situation, the seceding states go. We certainly could not justify carpet bombng New York and Los Angeles. The civilian loss of any such war would be horrific. Two wrongs do not make a right. The ends do not justify the means.
I believe abortion is a grave evil and that Lncoln waged an unjust war that was evil. I think that that
Is consistent with Church teaching on the sanctity of life. Thank you.

Dear Jdirishdad -

Being a loyal son of the Church, the body of Christ, means to subject oneself to the Roman Pontiff. In this case I subject myself to constant abuse. He consistently chastises his little ones (my wife, myself, my daughter) who attempt to love the Church as much as we can and want what is best for her.
Before you go further with this please answer one question..... who do you love more the Pope whoever he is.... or Jesus? I am thinking you lean towards Jesus.....

So Jesus wasn't mentioned one.single.time. But Lincoln got a shout out, hell MARTIN LUTHER KING JR got a shout out, he couldn't stand Catholics(the one true Church headed by the Pontiff)! Same with his father, who was named MARTIN LUTHER.......

Not only was the Greatest name to which every knee shall bend including Satan's not mentioned, but the Pope didn't mention a single. american. saint.

The USCCB on the subject -

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, S.C.,* St. John Neumann, C.Ss.R, St. Marianne Cope, O.S.F., St. Katharine Drexel,* S.B.S., St. Damien de Veuster of Molokai, SS.CC., St. Junípero Serra, O.F.M., St. Kateri Tekakwitha,* St. Mother Théodore Guérin, S.P, Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, C.Ss.R., St. Isaac Jogues, S.J., St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, M.S.C., St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, R.S.C.J., Blessed Sister Miriam Teresa, S.C.*

The ones with asterisks were born and raised in America, the rest achieved Sainthood mission-ing here.

This blog is designed to assist people in keeping the faith. It assists me. I frankly was surprised that this was coming out of St Louis, I thought the people there had lost the faith long ago.

The Vicar of Christ had the world's stage yet again, and he failed to present Christ to the world. But he presented a bully President(not Catholic), a late in life extremely heterodox ("Catholic") monk, a gentlemen with a general distaste in Catholics named after the arc-heretic who started the Reformation,(not Catholic) and the future patron Saint of Cafeteria Catholics and socialism who was also extremely heterodox......

I am loyal to the Pope. But he mocks Christ by not mentioning His Sacred name. I love God more. I am a papist, yet I don't worship him, I worship The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

-timman you are a blessing to my family.

Bryan,

The good news is that the Mississippi River would rise in importance again. It would be great for the economy and employment. We would have ocean ports at New Orleans. We would have to work out highway driving and air travel rights, but every one would be interested in economic cooperation. We would have the beautiful parks and few of the messed up cities. We can implement more market=based public economic policies reduce the welfare state. Good times ahead!

I do think the other commenter is right that we probably would not go to war for this. In flyover country, we might be just happy to be w/o them. We can continue to change hearts and minds and offer haven to mothers to be.
