Breaking: Holy See Responds to International Criticism of Pope on Ban of Prophylactics to Combat AIDS

This is wonderful evidence that the Holy Father was serious when he said he would stay on top of internet "news" cycle. Good response by the good guys.

Pray for the Holy Father-- defend him from the wolves!

A quick translation from the Italian by a colleague:

Communique of the Press Office of the Holy See

18 March 2009

With respect to the echoes raised by some words of the Pope concerning the problem of AIDS, the Director of the Press Office, Fr. Federico Lombardi, specifies that the Holy Father reiterated the positions of the Catholic Church, and the essential lines [of action] of his effort in combating the terrible scourge of AIDS:

First: by means of education unto responsibility of persons in the use of sexuality, and with the reaffirmation of the essential role of marriage and the family;

Second: by means of research and the implementation of effective cures for AIDS, and the placing of them within reach of the greatest number of the sick through many initiatives and health care institutions;

Third: by means of human and spiritual assistance to those sick with AIDS, as with all those who suffer, which have always been in the Church's heart.

These are the means with which the Church concentrates her effort, not retaining that to focus essentially on the greatest diffusion of prophylactics is, in reality, the best, the most farsighted, and efficacious way to combat the scourge of AIDS, and protect human life.

Hot dog! What a happy feast of St. Cyril of Jerusalem...oops its 1700 hours, I suppose our Holy Patron (and his Holiness's) St. Joseph- terror of demons.

Does that last paragraph read correctly or is my grammar deficient? Should there be a "not" modifying "retaining"?

Again, its concise and inviting. It is also disarming...as the truth tends to be...for those with ears to hear.

While a little stilted, the phrasing works out--

as in, NOT retaining the notion that condoms are the best way to fight AIDS, etc.

At least that was my take. Not bad for a quick translation, so I won't throw rocks at the friend who helped me out. :-)

As I thought, it is my ignorance of English. I missed the "that." Darn pronouns!

Yes I am a native English speaker...

Very good scoop btw!

Oh...quick reading pain strikes again...too much grad school where you read for effect, not for detail...

These are the means with which which the Church concentrates her effort, not retaining that [as in "those means just outlined above] to focus essentially on the greatest diffusion of prophylactics is, in reality, the best, the most farsighted, and efficacious way to combat the scourge of AIDS, and protect human life.

Delete these if you see fit, esteemed Timman!

Fr. Andrew, thanks, my translator friend sent it along. I have very little real journalist in me. BTW, I think I hurt his feelings when I said "stilted."
